Lansing-area health authorities say about 75 residents and employees at a retirement home have fallen ill in a suspected norovirus outbreak.

The illnesses are at the Burcham Hills Retirement Community in East Lansing.

Ingham County health officer Renee Branch Canady say authorities have been getting reports of gastrointestinal symptoms for about two weeks.

The Lansing State Journal reports that Burcham Hills directors say it remains open and isn't under quarantine. They say staff members have been working to control symptoms by limiting visitors' access and cleaning the center.

The norovirus is spread through contact with infected people and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms generally include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
