Niles woman recovering after crash involving semi

A Niles-area woman is okay after a semi ran a red light and braodsided her van.

The crash happend at the intersection of South 11 and Fulkerson streets on Thursday afternoon.

According to our reporting partners at WSJM Radio, first responders were forced to use the Jaws of Life to free Amy Leinonen out of her van.

The 31-year-old was rushed Memorial Hospital in South Bend for serious internal injuries. She is expected to recover.

Her three kids, ranging between 7 and 11 years old, were also in the van. They were treated and released from the hospital for minor cuts and bruises.

A Chicago man was driving teh semi. Police are still looking into why he ran the light. He wasn't hurt during the wreck.

Drugs and alcohol don't appear to be a factor in this crash.
