Niles hit hard by Old Man Winter

After several days of continued snow fall, Niles is getting a taste of Old Man Winter. In some places, folks have seen up to ten inches of snow.

Snow fall has varied across Michiana, thanks to the lake effect, but even city neighbors to Niles saw a variety of snowfall, some areas much less.

But regardless of the amount, Niles residents and city employees say they're prepared for the weather.

"Last week was kind of a challenge for us, the intermittent snow on and off. We got hit again today, but our crews do a really good job," said Joe Ray, the Public Works Director for the city of Niles. "Actually we're a little below on snow amounts and material we've put down thus far this year. We're actually a little under a normal average."

Local business owners say the weather, may even help the local economy.

"February is a quiet time, not just for downtown Niles, but for a lot of businesses, and the snow is all the more reason to stay close," said Daysha Amster, owner of OlFactory Hue.

"You've got things and you're within a mile of your home instead of having to go over to the mall area," said Lisa Croteau, the Program Manager for Niles Downtown Authority Main Street Program. "There's a lot that's downtown, particularly for the restaurants."
