Niles approves PILOT fee increase

NILES Niles residents could see some changes in their utility bills in coming years, but also some improvements to city services.

The Niles Daily Star reports that the city passed a budget which raises the PILOT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes) program fee, in order to cover a shortfall in the city's general fund.

City administrators say the 10 percent fee won't affect utility customers in the first year, but after that, rates would likely go up.

The extra money will allow the city to hire more fire and policemen.
