Light winds are slowing the finish of the Chicago-to-Mackinac Island yacht race, with the lead boat making a mere half a knot as it pushes toward the line.
About 350 yachts set sail in the Lake Michigan tradition that began in 1898. Some left Friday, while the bulk left Saturday on the 333 statute-mile course.
The Chicago Yacht Club's website showed lead boat Infinite Diversion barely moving as it pushed east about 6:30 p.m. EDT Sunday. The 56-foot yacht was about 27 miles from the finish line.
Actual winners in various divisions are based on a handicapping system that considers each boat's potential.
Last year's race was marred by the deaths of two crew members when their Kiwi 35-foot sport boat capsized during a storm.
