EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A monument honoring a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient has been dedicated in East Lansing.
The Medal of Honor monument in memory of U.S. Marine Corps Reserve 2nd Lt. Sherrod Skinner Jr. was unveiled on a rainy Veterans Day in front of the Hannah Community Center.
The Lansing State Journal says about 100 people attended the ceremony.
The East Lansing Rotary Club and the city partnered to raise funds for the monument, which serves as a permanent memorial to Skinner.
He grew up in East Lansing and received the Medal of Honor posthumously for bravery during the Korean War. He threw himself on an enemy grenade.
The plan is to expand the area in future years to incorporate a Veterans Garden honoring all veterans.
