Officials in Lansing and around Michigan are taking aim at synthetic marijuana that's sold in convenience stores and other shops.

The Michigan House Judiciary Committee plans a hearing Tuesday morning on legislation to give the state Department of Community Health more power to ban designer drugs.

In Macomb County, officials say they plan to issue health violations starting this week related to products sold under brand names including "Spice" and "K2."

County officials say they'll seek help from the public in reporting places where they're being offered.

The products produce a high when smoked and have been linked to severe adverse reactions, including death.

On Friday, officials in Oakland County asked gas stations, convenience stores and other retailers to cease the sale of such products.
