More Michigan National Guard troops are being deployed this year than in any year since 2005.

About 2,000 troops have been deployed this year. About 1,200 of them are in training in Mississippi to get ready for a mission in Afghanistan.

The number of Michigan National Guard members deployed has risen since the terrorist attacks of September 2001.

Fewer than 100 Michigan-based National Guard troops were deployed in 2001. That had risen to more than 1,000 a year by 2003.

The number of deployments fluctuates from year to year.

Most of the deployments in recent years have been to Afghanistan and Iraq.
