Michigan cherries ready for picking

NILES Beautiful weather over the 4th of July weekend makes for a perfect opportunity to pick fruit.

Lehman's Orchard in Niles is just now opening for the season. Their tart cherries are ripe and ready for picking. They say they have a great crop this year, and pickers shouldn’t be thrown by the word "tart."

“They’re not necessarily sour,” Steve Lecklider of Lehman’s Orchard says. “You can use cherries in all sorts of cooking. You can make scones, muffins pies. You can also make value-added products - salsas, jams, wine. It's a very versatile fruit.”

Lehman’s Orchard is open 9 to 5 Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 Sunday.
