Michigan State University is offering some students a way to clean their clothes for free.

The Detroit Free Press reports (http://on.freep.com/XCBTbS ) the East Lansing school plans to make laundry free for those living in residence halls starting this fall.

Kathy Collins is the school's director of residence education and housing services. She says it's one way for the school's housing to compete with privately owned off-campus apartments.

Currently, students in residence halls pay for laundry with quarters or with money stored on ID cards. The school estimates the average student spends $90 a year on laundry.

Under the new system, students living in dorms will swipe their ID cards to use the machines for free. Others still will have to pay.

Free laundry is offered at some other U.S. schools.
