A 16-year-old West Michigan boy has died after being shot in the face while he and a friend played with a gun.

WOOD-TV and MLive.com reports that Brandon Kuiper died Friday in a Grand Rapids Hospital.

Richard Usher was arraigned Thursday on an attempted manslaughter charge. That was upgraded Friday to manslaughter against the 18-year-old.

Usher, Kuiper and four other young people, ages 17 to 19, were in Kuiper's Tallmadge Township home, west of Grand Rapids, when the shooting occurred Wednesday night. The other teens were not hurt.

Defense attorney Philip Sielski expressed condolences Friday's to Kuiper's family. He told The Associated Press that he had no comment other than saying it was "very, very early in the case."
