Mich. lawmaker posts survey on proposed gas taxes

One Michigan lawmaker wants public input on how to solve the state's transportation funding dilemma.

Republican Rep. Dan Lauwers of Brockway has posted a five-question survey on his website asking St. Clair County and other local residents for feedback on the proposed gas tax and registration fee increases.

Questions include whether people support an increase in Michigan's gas tax to increase funding for road construction and maintenance.

Lauwers says he wants residents' opinions to better represent them in the voting process.

Gov. Rick Snyder has called for an additional $1.2 billion a year to fix the state's crumbling roads and bridges. Snyder's plan includes increasing the 19-cents-per-gallon state gasoline tax to 33 cents and raising annual registration fees for cars by 60 percent.
