A man has been sentenced to at least eight years in prison for his role in a home invasion that led to the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old Lansing girl.

D'Angelo Jordan didn't go into the home but he admits that he assisted in the crime by checking the property a day earlier. Amaia Edmond was accidentally shot by her stepfather after intruders entered in July 2010.

Jordan pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced Wednesday in Ingham County. His maximum sentence is 22 years, but the state parole board will decide how long he stays behind bars. The Lansing State Journal says Jordan was remorseful as he told the judge, "I cannot fathom what I've put the family through."

The girl would have turned 9 years old Thursday.
