DEARBORN, Mich. Authorities in suburban Detroit say a tip from the public helped them catch a 50-year-old man who crawled under a locked gate behind the Dearborn police headquarters toting a loaded rifle.

Police Chief Ronald Haddad says "a tragedy was averted" because of an "alert citizen."

Lt. Lt. Patricia Penman says a member of the public called 911 about 7 p.m. Saturday to say a suspicious-looking man was peering through the gate and was carrying "an unknown object that he removed from a vehicle."

Police say the man then sneaked under the gate. They say the found him lying under a police vehicle and say he'd concealed a Winchester rifle in a shirt lying next to him.

Penman says police took him to Oakwood Hospital for psychiatric observation.
