Police have identified a man suspected in a fatal hit-and-run crash in West Michigan.

Muskegon Police tell the Grand Haven Tribune that 24-year-old Dwayne Watkins turned himself into detectives and remains lodged in the Muskegon County Jail on a charge of leaving the scene of a traffic crash causing death or serious injury.

Police say Watkins was behind the wheel Saturday night when his car struck and killed 19-year-old Demari Churchwell of Muskegon. Churchwell was riding a mo-ped.

Churchwell was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The car had fled the scene before police arrived, but it was followed by a witness. Police obtained a description of the vehicle and license plate number.

Police said Churchwell was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
