State police are investigating the apparent suicide of a man who is believed to have earlier fired shots into a suburban Detroit police department.

The man followed a group of people to the Inkster police station west of Detroit just before midnight Friday.

One of two shots fired into the building smashed through glass doors leading to the station's lobby. No one was wounded inside the station.

The group of four to five people had gone there to file a stolen property complaint against the man.

Police in nearby Garden City later came across the suspect in his car and followed the vehicle. When it slowed and came to a rolling stop, officers found the suspect shot to death in the car.
