DETROIT A 47-year-old man has pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old boy whose bike was dragged by an SUV in Detroit.

Alfonso Butler of Detroit faces sentencing Dec. 13 before Wayne County Circuit Judge James Chylinski.

Authorities say Butler was speeding on Detroit's west side Sept. 24 when he struck Darrin Wilhite, then kept driving with the boy and the bike pinned underneath.

Authorities say Darrin was dislodged, but Butler drove off with part of the bike stuck to the vehicle's front end.

Butler surrendered and confessed the next day. His guilty plea is to failure to stop at the scene of a serious injury accident and being a habitual fourth offender.

Prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller tells the Detroit Free Press that Butler faces up to 15 years in prison.
