A 53-year-old man allegedly trying to collect a fee owed to a female escort was shot and killed by police after shooting an officer outside a Macomb County home.

Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green says officers opened fire on Robert Day of Ecorse about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday when he shot officer Donald Viars in the abdomen. The slug struck and lodged in Viars' protective vest.

A 21-year-old female escort called Day to the house to help her collect money for sexual services.

Police say Day forced his way into the home and demanded payment at gunpoint from a man inside the house. Another man inside the house called 911.

Day fired two shots at officers as he left. He may have been near the home providing security for the woman.
