BENTON HARBOR Benton Harbor library trustees voted unanimously Wednesday night to use $77,000 of its cash reserves to avoid layoffs and a major reduction in services.

The board has been looking for ways to keep the library going, after Benton Township stopped giving the library an annual $115,000 contribution.

Without this latest contribution, The Herald Palladium reports that the library would have had to lay off a handful of part time employees and reduce hours to four or five days a week. The library has already approved eliminating health coverage for full-time employees, starting in July.
