The new leader of the Michigan Democratic Party says it has time to agree on top-flight candidates to replace Sen. Carl Levin and take on Gov. Rick Snyder.

Lon Johnson told The Associated Press that he takes exception to the notion that Snyder is safe because no Democrats have stepped forward to run for governor and the party has to focus on holding Levin's seat.

He says there was little time to discuss candidates in recent months. He cites the November election, the passage of the Republican-sponsored right-to-work law and Democrats' fight over who should be party leader.

Johnson last month won his bid to replace Mark Brewer, who had the job for 18 years. Republicans say Democrats have a thin bench to challenge Snyder.
