Lead Chicago-Mackinac racers rounding Leelanau

The lead boats in the Chicago-to-Mackinac Island yacht race are rounding Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula amid lightening winds.

About 350 yachts set sail Saturday in the Lake Michigan tradition that began in 1898. The course is 333 statute miles.

The Chicago Yacht Club's website showed the front-running boats near the tip of northern lower Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula at 3:30 p.m. EDT Sunday. Actual winners in the multiple categories are based on a handicapping system that considers each boat's potential.

Last year's race was marred by the deaths of two crew members when their Kiwi 35-foot sport boat capsized during a storm.

An investigation by the governing body U.S. Sailing found the vessel's sails were too large for its weight under the conditions.
