The husband of a 75-year-old Detroit area woman charged in the slaying of her teenage grandson says the boy had "problems" and that he urged her to send him to his parents in Arizona.

Fred Layne testified Friday in Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac that Sandra Layne stopped telling him about the trouble she was having with 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman.

Sandra Layne is charged with first-degree murder. Her attorney has said she feared for her safety due to Hoffman's drug and behavior problems.

Hoffman was shot multiple times May 18, 2012 inside the West Bloomfield Township condo he shared with his grandparents. Tests showed traces of synthetic marijuana in his body.

Fred Layne says Hoffman moved in with them to complete high school as his parents divorced.
