Former first lady Laura Bush is to deliver the keynote speech Friday at a Davenport University fundraising gala in West Michigan.

The wife of ex-President George W. Bush is scheduled to speak at 8 p.m. at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.

About 900 people are expected at the event, which raises money for student scholarships at Davenport.

The program features a presentation of the 2013 Peter Cook Excellence in Business Award to Michael Jandernoa. The award recognizes business and community leaders.

It was established in 1998 in honor of Cook, a Davenport graduate.

The school says about $1.8 million has been raised for scholarships over the past 14 years.

Davenport is a private, nonprofit 11,000-student university with campuses across the state. It also has courses online.
