Kalamazoo authorities say police and residents of the western Michigan city got tired of hordes of vehicles cruising the streets late at night, so they staged a crackdown.

The Kalamazoo Public Safety Department says its officers sa lots of people congregating at downtown gas stations on weekendsfrom 2 to 4 a.m.

The department says the cruisers then would drive into neighborhoods and create nuisances with their noise and rowdy behavior.

In response, police say they staged crackdowns May 18 and 19 and then again last Saturday.

During this three-day operation, the department says police arrested 23 people on 58 separate charges. It says officers also issued nine misdemeanor and 22 civil infraction citations and impounded 14 vehicles.

Police say officers also seized two handguns.
