A Detroit judged has set bond for two brothers granted new trials after 25 years in prison for murder.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Lawrence Talon set bond Monday for Thomas and Raymond Highers at 10-percent of $10,000. The Highers only need to post $1,000 each to be released.
Talon last month threw out the Highers' first-degree murder convictions, based on testimony from witnesses who didn't come forward after the 1987 fatal shooting at a Detroit drug house. Prosecutors are appealing that decision and argued Monday that the brothers should remain jailed.
Prosecutors say they doubt the new witnesses, ex-Grosse Pointe schools friends who wanted marijuana.
John Hielscher has said in an affidavit that he saw the attackers at the drug house and they were black. The Highers brothers are white.
