DETROIT The status of a new hockey lease for aging Joe Louis Arena could be discussed by a Detroit City Council committee.
A resolution authorizing the lease with Olympia Entertainment was listed on Monday's Public Health and Safety Standing Committee agenda.
The new lease would be for five years and expire on June 30, 2015. It would be retroactive to 2010 when the old lease expired.
The NHL's Detroit Red Wings play in the city-owned downtown arena. Olympia Entertainment and the Red Wings are part of Mike Ilitch's stable of companies.
The city council already has approved the transfer of land just north of downtown and financing for a new hockey arena. The new arena could be built as early as 2016.
Joe Louis Arena opened in 1979.
