DUNCAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities in Michigan's Upper Peninsula say a Chicago-area man was killed when he and another Illinois man collided on their snowmobiles after a deer crossed their trail.

Michigan State Police identify the victim as 50-year-old Jeffrey Vandeneykel of Lombard, Ill.

According to The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton, the men were traveling on a trail in Baraga County's Duncan Township about 8:15 p.m. EST Sunday when a deer ran out, leading to the collision.

State police says both men were taken to Baraga County General Hospital, where Vandeneykel died and the other man received treatment for non-fatal injuries.

The site is in the Ottawa National Forest, about 45 miles south-southwest of Houghton.
