DEARBORN, Mich. Hundreds of people have participated in a suburban Detroit running event to honor a man fatally beaten in an attack that also left his wife and teenage son injured.

The Dearborn Public Schools on Saturday held the Robert Cipriano Cross-Country Meet. About 800 elementary and middle school students took part in one- and two-mile races.

The second annual event started with a one-mile race for Dearborn schools' staff members in memory of the district's former business services director.

School officials say a student run was being planned by Cipriano before he died.

Cipriano's son Tucker Cipriano and Mitchell Young were sentenced to life in prison in July for the 2012 slaying and assaults. Authorities say they planned to kill the family, steal $3,000 and a car and drive to Mexico.
