"Hiring Our Heroes" looks for vets in Benton Harbor

Thanks to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a job fair that caters specifically to veterans nationwide, set up shop in Benton Harbor Friday.

It's known as "Hiring Our Heroes". About 25 businesses showed up at the job fair and it ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Now, there weren't as many veterans there as they have seen at other fairs, but one associate from the Chamber of Commerce says it may be because these veteran job fairs are just starting to make a footprint in Benton Harbor and it is a smaller population than, let’s say Chicago or Houston.

Just because there weren't a surplus of veterans does not mean they don't need jobs.

One veteran I spoke with who served in the Air Force for about 8 years says he thinks the biggest issue is that they are looked at as only having specialized training, and those that didn't serve in the military may have more training and education.

He did say that he believes these types of job fairs really seem to help.

“My personality is, can’t be translated on paper, and a lot of different job and work environments so yes, I think it is very important for them so see you,” says Veteran Willie Mitchell.

The Western Regional Associate for “Hiring Our Heroes”, Virginia Carpenter says, “It’s fantastic because also the employers are finding out that the vets have so much to bring to the table, leadership skills, organizational skills, they have the attitude above and beyond, they will go to any lengths to satisfy their employer and do what they need to do.”

Since “Hiring Our Heroes” launched, is has held more than 400 job fairs nationwide and have helped more than 14,000 veterans and military spouses find employment. It’s next hiring fair will be in Chicago on March 21.
