An 18-year-old Grand Rapids man is recovering after losing two fingers in a fireworks accident in June.

A wick had burned too fast as Anthony Lackey Jr. held the firework. Andrew Lackey Sr. tells WOOD-TV that his son lost two fingers "all the way to the middle of his hand."

Despite the injury, the elder Lackey says he doesn't oppose the new Michigan law that makes fireworks widely available. His son also has a ruptured eardrum and hasn't seen his hand yet because of the bandages.

The father says his advice for others is simple but critical: Be careful.
