DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that will make more low-income adults eligible for health insurance through the federal health care law.

The Republican governor signed the much-debated Medicaid expansion bill on Monday during a ceremony at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.

Medicaid expansion is part of a strategy to ensure that nearly all Americans have health insurance under the 2010 Affordable Care Act. It was designed to cover the neediest uninsured people but became optional for states because of a Supreme Court decision.

Many GOP-led states opposed to "Obamacare" have declined the expansion, but it was a major priority for Snyder.
