DOWAGIAC A Cass County golf course that has been around for 53 years was shut down Wednesday, after a fire damaged its property.
When the Pokagon Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the Hampshire Country Club near Dowagiac, the building that housed 120 golf carts was engulfed in flames.
The electric carts and the equipment used to maintain them was destroyed.
The firemen concentrated on the club house, that was once the family's dairy barn, and were able to save it from serious damage.
The 36-hole golf course was first a farm, and it is still family owned.
The owners say learning about the fire was tough.
The state fire marshal has not ruled out arson and posted a sign on the golf course sign offering a $5,000 reward for information.
We will let you know when the golf course will open up.
“It was very emotional to see we have 120 carts and this is a big part of our income and now we have none,” said co-owner Lori Wells.
