Officials say they found out that a 12-year-old suburban Detroit girl brought a backpack to school filled with $20,000 in cash after she started giving away hundreds of dollars to friends.

WDIV-TV reported that the backpack was found Monday at Sixth Grade Academy in Taylor. Chief of Police Mary Sclabassi told The Detroit News the student apparently got the money from a child who lives near her and neighbors claimed the money.

Sclabassi called the case "a real first for me." She says an investigation is ongoing. Police aren't identifying the student, her family or the neighbors.

Police say they responded and secured the backpack. They also retrieved money that the girl gave away, which included $100 bills.

Sclabassi says some students got as much as $500 from the girl.
