OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 17-year-old girl and her 13-year-old brother were killed when the girl lost control of her minivan on an icy highway and crashed.
The Kalamazoo County sheriff's department says the crash happened about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday in Oshtemo Township, west of Kalamazoo.
Undersheriff Pali Matyas says the minivan struck a large tree and caught fire. He identifies the victims as Anneka and Landon Vels of Otsego.
Linda Weston says she and her husband were just getting ready to leave their home when they heard the crash, and Russell Weston saw that the vehicle had hit the tree.
Linda Weston tells MLive.com that she called 911 and her husband and another neighbor used fire extinguishers in an attempt to save the minivan's occupants.
