Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags lowered to half-staff across Michigan for a 25-year-old Army National Guard soldier from suburban Detroit who was killed in combat in Afghanistan.

The order honoring Spc. Kyle McClain of Macomb County's Shelby Township is for Thursday.

Authorities say McClain died Aug. 1 when an improvised explosive device went off in Salim Aka, Afghanistan. He was part of an engineering company based in Kalamazoo, and four other unit members were seriously hurt in the blast. McClain was promoted to sergeant on the day of his death.

His funeral is Thursday at St. Mary of the Hills Catholic Church in Rochester Hills. McClain is expected to be buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.
