UPDATE: Weather hurts search for missing man in Lake Michigan

Michigan City, Ind. The surface search for a man missing in the lake waters off of Michigan City has been suspended due to rough waters

Officers say 30-year-old Ron Wood Jr. of Chicago disappeared during a search and rescue Saturday evening more than a mile out from the Michigan City Lighthouse.

“We consider him a missing person at this point,” said Sgt. Shawn Brown of the Indiana Conservation Officers. “No one actually saw Mr. Wood go under the water, he just wasn't there.”

Brown said Wood and others aboard his 33-foot boat jumped in the lake to rescue two members of the group who had been swimming, but then the boat drifted away and the lone person still aboard couldn't start it.

Investigators say Wood may have aided in the rescue attempt before he went missing.

“He jumped off the boat and attempted to rescue two people in the water,” Brown said.

Another boater and a Coast Guard crew were able to rescue everyone but Wood, who couldn't be found.

Conservation officers and others searched for Wood until dark Saturday night.

The unseasonably cold water temperature made the lake’s waters particularly treacherous at about 45 degrees. The Coast Guard warned that an average person submerged in those waters has around 30 minutes before becoming hypothermic.

“You could literally, in the middle of summer, suffer from hypothermia and die from hypothermia after several hours in the water at that temperature,” Brown said.

Rough waters forced search crews to pull out of the water Monday.

"We'll do a surface search throughout the week at different times and just continue to monitor the water to see if anything will surface," Brown said Monday.

Anyone with information that could aid in this rescue effort is asked to call Coast Guard Search and Rescue at 414-747-7190.
