A fire has heavily damaged a building at a Washtenaw County apartment complex, displacing 12 families.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon at the Schooner Cove apartment complex in Ypsilanti Township, east of Ann Arbor.

Township Fire Chief Eric Copeland tells AnnArbor.com that the fire started in a second- or third-floor apartment at the front of the building.

Copeland says the cause of the ire isn't yet known.

The township got help from firefighters from Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Pittsfield Township, Augusta Township and Superior Township to control the blaze.

Apartment management company official Kelly Gorski says all displaced residents have somewhere to stay Monday night because of the Red Cross. Gorski says the company is working with the residents to transfer to other properties in the area.
