Parts of Michigan experienced a noticeable rotten egg smell after an early morning natural gas leak in Crawford County's Beaver Creek Township.
The Petoskey News-Review reports that Saturday's leak resulted from a failed valve at a gas well about 135 miles north of Lansing.
The leak was fixed, but the smell was noticed as far away as Petoskey and the Mackinac Bridge.
It's not known how long the gas leaked from the well which is owned by BreitBurn Energy Partners. Spokesman Greg Brown says the hole where the leak occurred was less than a quarter-inch in size.
Detroit-based DTE Energy says it has received dozens of calls about possible gas leaks across the northern Lower Peninsula. Spokesman Scott Simons said the utility will respond to each
report.
