GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Tom Damitio and Matt Knaack believe Grand Rapids needs a hostel to become a destination point for world travelers on a budget.

The no-frill, hotel-like establishments are popular in large cities but hard to support in smaller cities. Damitio and Knaack say that's why they are trying to get their "Stay Hostel" off the ground.

After the 2011 Grand Valley State University graduates receive their non-profit status, they plan to begin fundraising and continue looking for a large building in a commercially zoned neighborhood.

The hostel would be a communal area where travelers can reserve a bed and have access to washing machines, clean linens, bike rental, a kitchen and information about West Michigan.

Knaack tells MLive.com they'd like to emulate Hostel Detroit, based in Detroit's North Corktown Neighborhood.
