Enbridge Inc. has announced a $2.6 billion project that includes enlarging a pipeline that ruptured in southwestern Michigan two years ago so it can carry more oil.
The 286-mile-long line runs from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario. Some parts already have been replaced since the leak in July 2010 spilled more than 800,000 gallons of crude.
Stephen Wuori is president of liquid pipelines for Enbridge, based in Calgary, Alberta. He said Thursday the expansion is part of a project to increase oil flowing to refineries in the eastern U.S. and Canada. Supplies are rising partly because more oil is being mined from tar sands deposits in Alberta.
Environmentalists say tar sands oil is more corrosive and toxic
than conventional oil, but Wuori says the effect on pipelines is the same.
