DETROIT Detroit mayoral candidate Mike Duggan says the sentencing of ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick for corruption "marks the end of a devastating period" for the city.

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Kilpatrick to 28 years in prison after a series of scandals destroyed his political career and helped steer a crisis-laden city even deeper into trouble.

Duggan is a former head of the Detroit Medical Center and faces Wayne County Sheriff Bennie Napoleon in the November election.

Duggan says "it's time now to start to put these terrible events behind" and for the community to reclaim its government.
