Authorities in suburban Detroit say a police sergeant was waiting at a red light when a drunken driving suspect struck his patrol car, sending him to the hospital.

The Detroit Free Press and TV stations WXYZ and WDIV say the crash happened about 4:15 a.m. Sunday in Sterling Heights.

Police say the sergeant's car was stopped next to another car when the suspect's car tried to drive between them, hitting both cars.

Lt. Luke Riley says the 22-year-old suspect then tried to switch places with a 23-year-old female passenger. Police say they say they arrested the Warren man and Harrison Township woman.

Police say the sergeant was treated at Henry Ford Hospital and released, while a 47-year-old woman driving the other car the suspect hit declined treatment for wrist pain.
