Dozens of Mich. schools close amid threats, rumors

The Connecticut school massacre and doomsday scenarios based on the Mayan calendar have prompted the closing of dozens of Michigan schools for the rest of the year.

Many schools in Michigan were scheduled to have their last day of classes before the holiday break on Friday. But districts in Genesee and Lapeer counties posted announcements Wednesday evening canceling classes for Thursday and Friday.

Lapeer Community Schools says there have been numerous rumors circulating in the district and in nearby communities about potential threats.

WWJ-AM reports after-school extracurricular events, programs, sports and practices are also being canceled. Some other Michigan districts also canceled classes.

Friday is supposedly when ancient Mayans prophesized the end of the world. Stepped-up police patrols are planned at some Detroit-area schools.
