A Dowagiac teenager who brought two guns and a knife onto school property last September was sentenced to two months in jail and three years on probation on Friday.

According to the Herald Palladium, Phillip Kocsis, 17, a junior at Dowagiac Union High School, pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and disturbing the peace.

Originally, he faced eight weapons-related counts, five of which were felonies but those charges were dropped as part of his plea deal.

In September, school resource officers at Dowagiac Union received a tip that a student was keeping weapons inside their car on the school’s campus. When they searched Kocsis’ vehicle they found a 12-gauge shotgun, M-1 rifle, as well as ammunition and a Ka-Bar knife.

School officials suspended Kocsis after the weapons were found.

If he successfully completes his probation, Kocsis can keep the felony charge of carrying a concealed weapon off of his permanent record and continue to pursue his goal of eventually joining the military.
