DETROIT A judge has set Sept. 3 as the sentencing date for former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who faces years in prison for corruption.

Kilpatrick and a pal were convicted in March of a sweeping scheme to enrich themselves through fixed contracts, bribes and kickbacks. Kilpatrick's father, Bernard, was convicted of a tax crime.

Federal Judge Nancy Edmunds issued orders Thursday. Kwame Kilpatrick will be sentenced on Sept. 3, and Bobby Ferguson will get his punishment the next day. Both men were taken into custody after their convictions and will get credit for time behind bars. Bernard Kilpatrick will be sentenced on Sept. 10.

Court staff will determine a range of possible prison time, and lawyers in the case will make their own recommendations. The judge has much flexibility.
