Authorities say a Detroit police sergeant was rescued from a burning cruiser by area residents following a crash on Interstate 96.

WWJ-AM reports he was helped from the vehicle early Thursday following the crash.

The Detroit News reports that the sergeant was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that weren't believed to be life-threatening.

Firefighters extinguished the burning car and the freeway was closed for about three hours following the crash.
