Water and Sewerage officials in Detroit are warning customers about a scheme involving claims that a new federal program is available to pay their utility bills.
Officials say Friday that utility customers across the country have been contacted in person, via text message and through social media. They are asked to send their social security and bank account routing numbers.
Utility customers are given false routing numbers to use to pay their bills.
Detroit Water and Sewerage officials say customers should not give any personal or confidential information to anyone claiming to be part of programs to pay their bills.
