DETROIT (AP) - Detroit police have retired the scout car code that was assigned to an officer killed in the line of duty three years ago.

WXYZ-TV reports Officer Brian Huff was honored Friday with the retirement of his car number, 5-14.

Going forward, WDIV-TV says crews assigned to vehicle 5-14 will revert to 5-13.

An emotional early morning memorial service was attended by fellow officers and Huff's family.

Huff was a 42-year-old husband and father. He was fatally shot May 3, 2010, while investigating a complaint at an abandoned duplex.

His commander, Steve Dolunt, tells WJBK-TV retiring a scout car code has "never happened before." He calls it "a great idea."
