Detroit funeral set for soldier shot in Alaska

The Detroit mother of a soldier who authorities say was fatally shot by a fellow soldier in Alaska says she plans to travel there to make sure justice is served in the case.

Felicia Collins tells WJBK-TV Jawaun Collins joined the Army within the past year to escape the streets of Detroit and hoped for a long military career. His funeral is Thursday at Church of Our Father Missionary Baptist in Detroit with internment planned for White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy.

Twenty-one-year-old Fort Wainwright soldier Joshua Jordan Corona was charged with second-degree murder in the July 22 shooting death of 19-year-old Collins.

Collins was shot at a Fairbanks apartment. Corona told police he thought the gun was unloaded. Felicia Collins says Corona and her son were friends.
