SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. Crews are searching the Huron River in Washtenaw County for a 21-year-old man who disappeared after he and several companions jumped into the water from a bridge.

The search was underway Sunday afternoon in Superior Township, near Ypsilanti.

Ypsilanti fire Capt. Scott Maddison says about a half-dozen young adults jumped from a bridge into the water before dawn Sunday. He says one of the jumpers became distressed, and a lifeguard who was part of the group tried unsuccessfully to rescue him.

Maddison says the sheriff's department and Superior Township crews were carrying out the search Sunday.

The sheriff's department says the missing man is a resident of Pittsfield Township.
